(Kim here)How not to kill your husband…. No, not a book? Should be. I think when I am angry, it would probably be a parenting book. When am mad, it tends to be at my kids. Frustrated about how I dealt with a situation. I always turn to Dr. Michele Borba books. She puts me on a new path. I can hear her voice telling me it will be ok and I do better next time. Move on and be better – the mother’s mantra.

‘Tis the gift to be simple
‘Tis the gift to be free
‘Tis the gift to come down where we out to be
And when we find ourselves in the place just right
Twill be in the valley of love and delight
That’s a Shaker Hymn called ‘Tis a Gift to Be Simple and in my Christmas decorations box I have a lovely illustrated gift book edition of this classic. When I’m angry I, sometimes, turn to this book (or sing the song in my head) to remind me what’s important … the simple things in life and often the thing that makes me angry doesn’t seem so bad anymore.
(Peg here) Hmmmm, probably something that doesn’t require me to focus too much. Something like Vogue magazine with pretty pictures. Usually a perfume strip helps me to calm down.

I think most of you know that The Book Broads are parents to young-ish kids. We love to read books to them, have them read to us, and we also love to play music in the house and in our vehicles – music uses words, and that is what we love! Angela’s son loves Signing Time and he is amazing at sign language, Peggy’s daughter loves listening to The Bee Gees (want to see her disco moves), my kids by default listen to Neko Case, The Dr. Horrible Soundtrack etc. We do however, all agree on two favourite kids bands… The Kerplunks (we hope to talk to them soon) and Bobs and Lolo.
I had the chance to talk to Juno-nominated Bobs and Lolo last week, and talked to them about music, words and their Juno nominations for Best Children’s Album. Here is our video out on the street – it was cold, but be thankful you could not smell the decaying herring roe. See, video does have its advantages! The ladies are lovely and my kids were star-struck. Check out www.bobsandlolo.com for more about them and their shows.
Last weekend Peggy, Angela and moi, Kim, had a work retreat on Gabriola Island. We talked books, drank booze, ate great food and met with children’s book illustrator and author, Dianna Bonder. We had the great pleasure to hang out at her abode, peruse her studio and check out some of her new art work – we LOVED the pirate theme. Arrrrr!
Check out Dianna’s website at www.diannabonder.com. She does do some book store visits and she is a popular author for schools around Canada – she is heading to the Kelowna area soon… lucky kids who get to hear her talk about her work. She is also a featured author/illustrator at Nanaimo’s Bookfest this Spring. More info to come on that.
